SingleHop Customer Story: GNIF Fights to End Stigmatization of Mental Illness

Despite the fact that a large number of people are affected by one, mental illness is one of the most stigmatized medical conditions in our society. Out of the 45.1 million adults currently living with mental illness in the US, only 25 percent (1 out of 4) believe that people are caring and sympathetic to persons with mental illness, according to the American Psychological Association1.

Shaheen E. Lakhan MD, PhD, realized the disconnect between the research on mental illness available to scientists and medical professionals and the general population’s awareness of and access to said research. As a result, he founded the Global Neuroscience Initiative Foundation (GNIF) with the mission of ending the stigmatization of mental illness through educating the general public. He saw the need for a venue in which scientific and clinical research findings could be translated into information easily digestible by an audience outside of the medical community.

Brain Blogger became that venue.

With less time spent managing the GNIF website and Brain Blogger, Lakhan is able to dedicate his time to expanding the foundation’s work  contributing to the research pool.

“Brain blogger reports on it, but GNIF is now able to take on the role of generating the research,” he said. “We do need-based assessments asking where the current findings are limited—it might be data to support the use of a medication, device or educational measure. Then, we dedicate resources to conduct the research to fill those gaps.”
