Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over 18733 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine. It's a bit like a tower. At the base is the Linux kernel. On top of that are all the basic tools. Next is all the software that you run on the computer. At the top of the tower is Debian -- carefully organizing and fitting everything so it all works together. Unfortunately Debian is *not* compatible with cPanel/WHM or Plesk. With its rather copious variety of packages freely available to download using its custom 'apt-get' system, there should be no problem at all installing the correct packages to get your lean, mean, and green server up and running in no time. The latest stable release of Debian is version 4.0(Etch) which has been thoroughly tested by the developers to ensure server stability along with compatibility. Also to add, in case anyone has heard or used the distro called Ubuntu which has swept the online Linux communities within the past two years. Ubuntu's core is based off the debian stable branches, so if indeed you've used Ubuntu before you'll feel right at home using Debian.
