Microsoft Active Directory
Active directory or AD for short was created by Microsoft for use primarily in Windows environments. It was based on an implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol or LDAP. AD's most used and primary purpose is to provide authentication for windows machines. Active directory uses and stores a central database of information for each user, which includes but is not limited to individual settings and restrictions.
Active directory also ties into many of the other Microsoft server software such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Sharepoint, and Microsoft ISA. The integration of these services with AD not only will improve security but also productivity time as one change on one server can change on all servers.
