Windows server 2008 is the successor to Windows server 2003.  It was developed alongside Windows Vista and shares much of its functionality and design.   Its improvements range from a new Windows Firewall to the addition of Windows Communication Foundation which is based on .NET Framework 3.0.   This edition also makes several memory and file system improvements which allow for increased maximum RAM and files sizes.  Windows 2008 server also introduces Server Core which is an installation of Windows server without a GUI.  This installation can be useful when installing Windows server 2008 as a Web server or Hyper-V virtual server.

• Standard, Enterprise and Web Server editions available in both 32 and 64 bit
• Windows Web Server 2008 and Standard Server 2008 have a 4 gigabyte RAM limit on 32 bit systems and a 32 gigabyte limit on the 64 bit version
• Windows Server 2008 Enterprise has a 64 gigabyte limited on 32 bit systems and a 1 terabyte limit on the 64 bit edition
• Windows 2008 R2 was released in only 64 bit and has a 2 terabyte limit on the Enterprise and Datacenter Editions.  R2 Standard has a 32 gigabyte RAM limit.  R2 HPC Server 2008 has a 128 gigabyte limit
• Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation edition has an 8 gigabyte limit
