Windows Dedicated Server vs. Linux Dedicated Servers

When the decision is made to get a dedicated server, there are two options that can be a bit difficult to choose between. Windows dedicated servers and Linux dedicated servers both have their advantages and disadvantages, ranging from user preference to application requirements.

The first thing that needs to be considered is what the applications that you are going to be using will need. In most cases, Windows dedicated servers and Linux dedicated servers will fare fine for any particular application, as most use a combination of PHP and MySQL which are available on both platforms. There are instances where a program will need something like a service that is only written for the Linux platform, or a site written in ASP which will require Windows. These two examples are things that must be thought out before a choice is ultimately made.

Another thing to consider is technical expertise. Windows dedicated servers are perfect for someone who is starting out in the world of dedicated servers, as the interface is both intuitive and easy. Linux dedicated servers on the other hand, are built more for the technically inclined, although it doesn’t hurt to just jump in and try to learn it. There are applications, such as cPanel, that make administrating a Linux dedicated server very simple, but there are drawbacks such as options for customization being scarce.

A Windows dedicated server will need a lot of clicking, and options will be spelled out on screen; and a Linux dedicated server will require remembering of various commands, with basically no graphical interaction. So the choice also falls under preference, the ease of the Windows graphical interface, or the vast amount of customization options present with the Linux command line. Either Linux dedicated servers or Windows dedicated servers can be used by businesses and individuals.
