How can we provide Cheap Dedicated Servers?

By Chris Larkin

Think Singlehop’s prices are great? You’re right they are. We are proud to offer cheap dedicated servers, and there are several reasons as to why that is the case. We here at Singlehop love our customers and for that reason, I would like to share with you the different ways that we keep our costs low and how we pass those savings on to you in the form of low prices on quality services.

First off, the majority of our customers use CentOS as the operating system on their Singlehop Dedicated Server.  CentOS is a free, open source, Linux distribution and very popular in the ranks of customers using Linux Dedicated Servers. Since CentOS is free, we can pass that savings to us along to our customers in the form of better hardware and cheaper prices.  What about our Windows customers?  We have many of those as well. Because we have so many Windows dedicated server customers we were able to become partners with Microsoft and as a result, we get volume discounts on licensing their products. These discounts are passed on to our customers, so we can offer better pricing on Windows dedicated servers than our competitors.

Our purchasing power is not just limited to Microsoft Windows Dedicated Servers and is another way that Singlehop is able to offer such great prices to our customers in the form of cheap dedicated servers. Singlehop originally started as the Dedicated Server division of midPhase Services Inc. MidPhase has grown at an astronomical rate over the last four years. As a result, the purchasing power of midPhase has become quite substantial. Now, even though Singlehop is independent of midPhase, the ownership remains the same and as such Singlehop’s purchasing power is huge. Everything from bandwidth, to hardware, to datacenter space is available to us at premium pricing and we pass those savings directly on to our customers. Both our Windows and CentOS Dedicated Server customers see these benefits with our cheap dedicated servers.

Another way that we keep the prices so low is using open source technology wherever we can. As stated, most of our customers choose the open source CentOS Linux distribution for their dedicated server’s operating system. The open source software that we use to monitor our entire network is Nagios. We support open source scripting languages such as PHP and Ruby on Rails. Our default database format is mySQL. This keeps our costs low and allows our customer to put their money into the hardware that is the backbone of the dedicated server solution.

While I do not hesitate to use the term Cheap Dedicated Servers, I want to stress that by cheap, I mean that the server is cheap to you, our customers, but in no way do we sacrifice server quality. All of our servers are made by Super Micro with the highest quality hardware. Intel Core2Duo and Xeon low voltage processors are standard in both our Linux Dedicated Servers and our Windows Dedicated Servers and we use Enterprise class SATA hard drives. Ultimately what this means to our customers is a great server for a really great price.
