Tandem by SingleHop Touches Down

We have always had a very successful reseller program within SingleHop. The goal from its creation was to always enable our resellers with the greatest amount of resources and complete autonomy. We want our resellers to look and feel like enterprise companies while being able to take advantage of our wholesale prices and white label technology. As we as a company have continued to grow and increase our product line we have passed those advances on to our resellers. This has never been more evident than the redesign of Tandem by SingleHop.

If you are unfamiliar with the term tandem as it pertains to skydiving is a very simple concept. A novice jumper is literally harnessed to a veteran jumper in order to make sure experience and knowledge trump fear and nervousness. Our Tandem Reseller program works in a very similar manner.

SingleHop’s resellers are given absolute complete control over their hardware, which in turn allows their clients to have complete control as well. We also understand the importance of added value when running a business which is why we offer a number of perks other web hosting companies use as additional add-ons and premium costs. Our client portal LEAP3 is the industry’s fastest and most robust and can be completely white labeled for our Tandem Resellers.

The principal product for our resellers over the past few years has been dedicated hosting. We are thrilled to announce that we have now tripled the amount of products that are available for reselling! Tandem clients are now able to sell cloud and shared hosting! We know that both cloud and shared hosting are rapidly growing areas and hope that our clients are able to take full advantage of them!

The LEAP3 Release Party

Who doesn’t love a good party, right? Well you’ll be happy to know that SingleHoppers know how to party!  A few months ago when we attended  Cloud Expo in Santa Clara, CA we threw a rather large release party for LEAP3!

Not only was LEAP3 the largest product launch in the history of SingleHop, we did it while 3000 miles away from home! As you can probably imagine this took a tremendous amount of hard work and strategic planning. Cloud Expo had roughly 9,000 attendees and hundreds of exhibitors. The challenge? How to stand out in the crowd…

Fortunately for us, we have a very recognizable brand and a strong history of being a leader within the industry when it comes to automation and product development. So through countless hours on the exhibition floor speaking to everyone from graduate students to chief technology officers are team did an amazing job explaining and highlighting the benefits of the LEAP platform.

In order to show our appreciation for not only our team, but those attendees who spent time and energy listening to and watching live demos of LEAP3 we threw a massive party! A huge thanks goes out to Andrew Munz who was mastermind behind this event.

Without any further ado, here is the behind-the-scenes footage of our LEAP3 release party!

SingleHoppers Know Client Engagement

Anyone who has spent any amount of time in the web hosting industry will most certainly tell you that it is an extremely competitive space. Not only are there literally, tens of thousands of companies who offer web hosting, the needs and wants of potential and existing clients are rapidly changing. It’s because of these reasons, we are extremely grateful for our nearly 4500 clients. After all, without them we would have nothing but a lot of lonely servers.

Within SingleHop, every team member, no matter the department, knows the importance of listening to our clients.  We also know that sometimes it takes more than just listening, it takes action to make sure our clients are completely satisfied. This level of client engagement is due in large part to the Net Promoter Score (NPS) system that we and other industry leaders utilize. No matter the size of your business, albeit 10 to 10,000 customers, this is an extremely effective tool. Using NPS has really allowed us to put our hand on the pulse of our clients and effectively modify different points of service.

An example of SingleHoppers listening and then taking swift action was the after the launch of LEAP3 in November.  There were a few different elements of the management platform that our clients thought could be more clearly defined. So guess what our development team did? They listened to our clients’ suggestions and redesigned those elements accordingly.

As our list of products and services continues to grow, so does the responsibility to provide the highest level of client satisfaction. I can assure you that despite our rapid growth (number of employees increased by 75% in 2011) that every SingleHopper takes that responsibility with a great sense of pride.

As 2011 comes to an end, we want to thank each one of our clients for an amazing year! We promise to 2012 is going to be even better!

Co-Founder, Dan Ushman on SYS-CON.TV

With nearly 9,500 attendees at Cloud Expo in Santa Clara this year, it was a near miracle we were able to get Dan Ushman and the Conference Chair, Jeremy Geelan together for a few minutes to discuss all things SingleHop.  The event was a huge success for the entire SingleHop team!

Geelan is an industry staple and quite the emcee! Below is except from the interview and as well as link to the interview on SYS-CON.tv

“The cloud is more of a concept – it’s the idea that you can increase and decrease and scale based on what you need at the moment,” noted Dan Ushman, Co-Founder of Singlehop, in this SYS-CON.TV interview with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan at the 9th International Cloud Expo, held Nov 7-10, 2011, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. In addition, Ushman discusses Singlehop’s launch of a cloud computing and infrastructure platform, autoprovisioning dedicated servers, and more.”

Infrastructure as a Service for All Sizes

As many of  you know we recently launched the latest version of our LEAP platform, LEAP3 at Cloud Expo in Santa Clara, CA. I am pleased to say that the launch as well as the feedback thus far has been extremely positive. The web-based platform is a complete rewrite of its earlier predecessors and far more robust!

One of the biggest changes within LEAP3 is that it allows users who are not yet clients to explore the portal. This was a big shift in mindset within SingleHop, but one we are thrilled to have made. After all, if the demonstration of a product is greatly impactful, it doesn’t really need to be sold, it sells itself.

The principle elements of LEAP3 were created to allow clients to Design, Deploy, and Manage entire hybrid solutions from anywhere, and from a variety of access methods.

We have a huge variety of clients at SingleHop, from small businesses to international enterprise companies that have all taken advantage of LEAP3 and it’s all possible because of its flexibility and on-demand functionality.  “Many things to many people” as I like to say!

As Infrastructure-as-a-Service provider, we understand there is no one-size-fits-all solution and because of that we again, invite you to take a chance to test drive LEAP3. You can customize your own solution or even browse those created by others in our Crowdsourced Marketplace.

SingleHop has Crowds Gathering at Cloud Expo

What a show!!! This is by far the largest trade show we’ve been apart of in our company’s existence.  I am trying to get the final number of attendees at this point, but rumors are circulating that it is around 9500!

There have literally been hundreds of sessions and countless keynote speeches!

In order to handle the masses of people we brought an army of SingleHoppers to the event – 16 in total.  It is by far the most of any company, even the locally based ones.

Our team has done an amazing job this past week, not only making sure LEAP3 and the new site were ready to launch Monday, but just battling through the long expo hours and keeping spirits high and smiles constant.

LEAP3 Takes Server Management to a Whole New Level

How we’re blurring the line between dedicated servers & managed hosting with LEAP

LEAP can be many things to many people. For some folks who are not involved (spared) in daily IT tasks, it can be described as simply a hosting provider’s client portal. From an accountant’s perspective, it might just be a quick way to access invoices and make payments. It starts getting interesting when you consider the points-of-view for three highly engaged groups: the business owners, the system administrators and the developers. For these three groups, it has evolved a great deal and translates into real-world benefits.

This Stuff is Expensive

Lets backtrack a little. Everyone knows that infrastructure is expensive. The only thing more expensive than buying infrastructure in the first place is managing, fixing and replacing it on an on-going basis. Year-in-year-out, the total cost of ownership for data center assets has gone up. This cost rise is much like the utility energy that keeps pumping excited electrons through circuit boards inside that infrastructure. Therein lies the appeal of Infrastructure-as-a-Service, no need to convince you of that, I’m sure, so I’ll skip that part.

What does this have to do with LEAP?

For starters, LEAP enhances that on-demand infrastructure awesomeness by adding a whole new layer of bang. Not only is the infrastructure available “at your fingertips,” but so are the supporting services you need to effectively manage it.

Yes, these are sometimes little things. Things like rebooting servers, reinstalling operating systems, & setting up backup routines. But these little things add up into one huge thing collectively; they all cost money and they all take time to execute. Remember when your data center was in your office closet? It was easier to walk over and restart a server then. Take that scenario, for a moment, and imagine your sever was down and you had to hard-cycle it. But you were at home. In the prehistoric era (1999) you’d have to get in your car, drive over and hold the button for 10 seconds. In the renaissance (2007) you might call your managed hosting provider and ask them to do it for you. In the future (2011) you would just log into the LEAP Platform, using the Client Portal (web edition), mobile portal (on any smartphone) or issue an automated API call and LEAP would restart your server for you & make sure it comes back up. If you were at home or out to dinner, this would save your night (trust me!) And that’s a pretty compelling thing.

“But Dan”, you ask, “Anyone can automate server reboots, right?? What’s so special about that?” I’ll get back to that in a minute, trust me…

The Genie in the Bottle

Why do something yourself when your hosting provider can do it for you? Rub the bottle (call support) and some tech in a data center far, far away will take care of that. Don’t panic, no one is taking that away, but note that with the prevalence of automation and on-demand capability, Self Service is becoming cool again. And why wouldn’t it? The providers who are flourishing are the ones that have invested in automation (We believe we are in this group)… and their customers will certainly benefit from this as well, both in the short and long term. Everyone wins. In fact, we firmly believe that the only smart business move for IaaS providers (like us) is to continue to embrace Self Service and extend internal automation to clients.

The Most Important Point I Make

By saying Self Service, we don’t mean you literally have to do everything manually by yourself. We mean that you can press a button and an automated computer system will do it for you. No, not robotic arms, but close: little software robots. If you think about this on a massive scale, say installing 1,000 physical servers at the same time, it’s a pretty powerful thing and that is exactly what our LEAP3 Platform does so well.  It took us five years to perfect that part of the platform. That’s a lot of lessons learned. Leverage that expertise and use it!

Did I mention ‘Automation’?

Back to my previous point: the automation of one feature, like rebooting downed servers, is cool. But to blur the line between infrastructure and managed hosting, you obviously have to do more than that. LEAP3 takes it to a whole new level. Here are a few of the things LEAP3 can do (pretty much instantly) that used to take teams of people a lot of time to do. Any one of these items can be done from a computer, mobile phone, iPad or whatever:

- Rapidly deploy hundreds of Dedicated servers, Private Cloud servers or Public Cloud instances simultaneously. Yes, at the exact same time.

- Install backup software, configure the backup agent on the server & host and start the first backup cycle.

- Yes, restart servers & power cycle APC ports and manage switch ports

- Apply new network VLAN configurations to numerous devices simultaneously

- Manage rDNS entrees for any one particular hostname and update them in real time

There are over 400 total automation features packed into LEAP3, so I was obviously only able to list a few here. The point I am trying to make is all of these tasks took time and would typically only be performed for a client by a managed hosting provider. It would cost money from the client to pay someone to manage these tasks. It would cost money for the provider to pay an employee to perform these tasks, when that employee could do something else.

In Conclusion, Fine Sir.

My point is actually quite simple. We believe that by enabling our customers to self-execute routine IT tasks, everyone wins and everyone realizes the benefits.

Yes, we know that this might cost us some revenue here SingleHop. It is no secret that we sell managed hosting and that we generate some of our revenue from these types of services — but we feel that in the long run, by providing a more robust platform and set of tools, we will save our customers both time and money, which will result in a true realization of the beauty of IaaS. And that makes this a win-win-win proposition.

Until next time,

By Dan & Friends (just kidding, no friends were harmed in the production of this blog post.)

Monumental Day for SingleHop at Cloud Expo

If you are reading this, you’ve probably noticed things look a little different around here today. And by a little different, I mean dramatically different!  As you can tell, we have completely redesigned the site!

I know some of you may fear change, but rest assure, you’re going to love it!   The site is not only easier to navigate it, but its design and functionality are truly one of a kind.  Our developers, designer (yes, one guy), and programmers spent thousands of hours creating more than just a website, it’s an extension of the entire SingleHop experience.

Please feel free to look around.  Enjoy!

But wait, there’s more!!! In addition to a complete redesign of SingleHop.com, we are thrilled to announce the release of the highly anticipated LEAP3, our custom-built client portal. Some of you may extremely familiar with LEAP and some of you may not, either way you will not find another product like it on the market today!

Five Reasons LEAP3 is unlike any other web based platform:

  • Ability to build your own hybrid solution & deploy it with one click.
  • Ability to leverage hybrid solutions designed by the community
  • Grouping of infrastructure components in to solutions
  • Increased productivity for IT departments, with better tools
  • Modernized UI, designed to support hybrid computing

If you would like to give it a test drive (you no longer have to be a client) please go to LEAP3.

This is a monumental day in the history of SingleHop! Thank you for sharing it with us!

Tech.li Features the SingleHop Startup Story

We at SingleHop are not shy about our bootstrapped beginnings. In fact we love them!  It is the take-no-prisoners attitude that allows our company to continue to grow at such a rapid rate…

Sure, we might not be considered a startup anymore as we just celebrated our 5th anniversary, but that does not mean an ounce of that startup energy has left the building.  Quite the contrary actually, as we continue to add the right people to our team, that original energy grows exponentially.

The timeliest example of this is the office atmosphere right now! We are in the final stages of preparation for the highly anticipated release of LEAP3, which has equated to long hours and lots of training for everyone.  Oh, and did I mention we just took over more office space in our building? Yes, that’s right, in the middle of the insanity that is a product launch we had movers all over the office this earlier this week. With new SingleHoppers joining the team each week, it was necessity.

There were boxes, cords, computers, frogs (fake ones) everywhere and no one complained.  People just shuffled around from one desk to the next making sure our clients never felt the craziness.   I think that speaks volumes about our company’s culture and our origins.

If you want to read more about those origins, check out the latest article from Tech.li, a Chicago based site that is the hub for all things startups! We love these guys!

IaaS & Cloud Technology

SingleHop’s IaaS Cloud: Why Re-invent the Wheel?

Infrastructure as a Service clouds have been a hot topic over the last few years.  Amazon’s EC2, the most well-known example, has become almost a household name, at least in really nerdy households. Why are these clouds so popular? Well, it really comes down to some clever software.

With IaaS, you try to think of the common tasks you’d ask an expensive and overworked systems administrator to do. Then, you write some software that takes care of those tasks and provides the end-user of the computing resources with an interface to that software — a pretty UI, or just some API calls. The end result is that these common operations become faster, cheaper, and more reliable than using human system admins. IaaS software also enables on-demand billing. This is something that’s not really possible with traditional servers, because having a human go and set up your machine adds a high initial transaction cost. When you have software doing this instead, it becomes practical to provision and bill for capacity in short time spans.

This software is the IaaS platform, and everyone who is running an IaaS cloud has one.  This is such a lucrative field that a whole bunch of projects are trying to make one of these platforms. The number of offerings out there is staggering. Amazon’s AWS, which is not open-source, is kind of the gold standard against which all other platforms are measured. Then there’s Eucalyptus, which is an open implementation of AWS, and Nebula, and is used in scientific computing clouds. There’s OpenStack, which aims to be an off-the-shelf platform for datacenter operators. Redhat has CloudForms, Xen has Citrix Project Olympus, VMWare has vCloud, Microsoft has … well, I don’t know, but probably something that involves the word ‘hyper’.

Here at SingleHop, I’ve been heading up the effort to develop our own IaaS platform, which we call Cascade. You might wonder, if all of these different IaaS platforms are already out there, and if they all do pretty much the same thing, why did we develop our own? In a word: integration.

SingleHop was already an industry leader in datacenter automation before we launched Cascade. We wanted to be able to leverage all our existing automation tools to create our cloud. So, we now deploy cloud nodes using the exact same system that deploys vanilla dedicated servers for our clients, and we keep track of both kinds of servers in the same place. We have a common internal UI for servers and VMs, which makes it easier for the sys admins who answer your support tickets to help you. SingleHop also has very powerful network automation tools, and we’ve been able to leverage those tools to provide the same networking options to VMs as we do to vanilla servers.  This includes dedicated vlans, HSRP for high availability, shared firewall, DDoS protection and IPEnsure for keeping subnets out of spam RBLs.

Finally, at the highest levels of integration, we’ve been able to create the LEAP3 solutions center. This system, which allows you to create solutions using a mix of dedicated and virtualized resources, is only possible because of the tight integration inside SingleHop.

Of course, we recognize some of the drawbacks in creating a proprietary system, too. Our platform is not open-source, and it would make no sense to open-source it given how tied into our own setup it is. This means that we’re the only ones making changes to it; but we already do a great job supporting almost any operation you’d like to perform on your cloud or VM, including some that nobody else supports (like flexible disk resizing.)  Also, our new Dropzone API, while powerful, is proprietary to Cascade, which is a barrier to entry. But we’re committed to releasing industry-standard API bindings to our Cloud, including AWS and OpenStack, so this problem will be going away shortly.

We did a lot of hard work in creating our IaaS platform. But we think that work was justified in light of the benefits our platform confers on you, the customer.  I’m excited about what we’ve accomplished, and I hope it meets your needs for a dedicated, hybrid, or virtualized computing environment.
