The Cultivation of Company Culture

I recently came across a great article on company culture entitled “Your Perks Aren’t Motivating Your Employees” via Inc. Magazine. Being a relatively young company, our culture is a constant discussion topic. Don’t get me wrong we have management meetings, marketing meetings, and product meetings just like any other rapidly growing company because those are necessary to achieve success. But culture, is one of those funny things that if you don’t address it, considerate it, or cultivated it, it might evolve into something that is less than ideal.

As we continue to grow both in revenue and in number of employees it’s extremely important that we take our culture into consideration. Understanding that culture cannot be created by Ping-Pong tables and free energy drinks, is a very important distinction for young companies to understand.

Space, as an office space, can be a huge factor in a company’s culture. We for instance have a great space but we have completely outgrown it and have been forced into some less than ideal office arrangements. It would be harmful to the culture if we just continued to cram desks into one another and not acknowledge the less than ideal situation. The flipside is the decision to be very open with the staff about these arrangements being temporary and the stressing the importance of finding the ideal office for our company. Our team leaders have been organizing more social events than normal to make sure our newest employees get the chance to meet everyone. Remember new employees to not have a frame of reference to how it “used to be.”

Our next space will be open air and allow our teams to work closely with one another. But until then it’s extremely important that we not let the physical constraints of our office keep us from building our ideal culture.

Another very important factor in creating culture is free stuff. I know that sounds like a radio station giveaway, but it’s true. The weight of the “free stuff” or office perks has to do with the value in which employees place on it. I know this sounds pretty basic, but you would be surprised how many companies say “I don’t get it, we provide free coffee, what else do they want?” The question is, do people in your office drink coffee? And if so what kind of coffee do they like? Does everyone drink the same kind of coffee? What about those of the offices that drink tea? What is the value of your “free coffee” to those employees? I am happy to say that the drink options at our office rival any 7-11 convenience store.

The true value factor of office perks cannot be forgotten. If it is the perks and even the incentives that are part of those perks will suffer. Think of it this way, if it’s not valued, it’s not a perk. Engaging with employees to find out what they like, want, or need is probably a surefire way to build the culture you want.

The LEAP3 Release Party

Who doesn’t love a good party, right? Well you’ll be happy to know that SingleHoppers know how to party!  A few months ago when we attended  Cloud Expo in Santa Clara, CA we threw a rather large release party for LEAP3!

Not only was LEAP3 the largest product launch in the history of SingleHop, we did it while 3000 miles away from home! As you can probably imagine this took a tremendous amount of hard work and strategic planning. Cloud Expo had roughly 9,000 attendees and hundreds of exhibitors. The challenge? How to stand out in the crowd…

Fortunately for us, we have a very recognizable brand and a strong history of being a leader within the industry when it comes to automation and product development. So through countless hours on the exhibition floor speaking to everyone from graduate students to chief technology officers are team did an amazing job explaining and highlighting the benefits of the LEAP platform.

In order to show our appreciation for not only our team, but those attendees who spent time and energy listening to and watching live demos of LEAP3 we threw a massive party! A huge thanks goes out to Andrew Munz who was mastermind behind this event.

Without any further ado, here is the behind-the-scenes footage of our LEAP3 release party!

Change Can be Scary, But Not With SingleHop

Any time you go into a new experience there is an adjustment period. This could be purchasing a new car, changing financial institutions, or starting a new job. The bottom line is that change takes time, patience, and understanding. At SingleHop we recently created a team of specialists that help our new clients adapt to their new product and/or services.

After doing extensive research and utilizing our Net Promoter Score (NPS) tool we discovered that the longer our clients stay the happier they are. We saw the opportunity to better our systems and service to our newest clients to ensure that their first 120 days are nothing but smooth sailing. Switching providers can be an extremely stressful process when you consider all of the factors – the migration process, a different technical support team, and billing just to name a few.

Our team of New Client Specialists’ (NCS) goal is to make sure the transition is as seamless as possible. If this means daily phone calls or simply monthly checkups, our guys make sure the job is done and done well. I recently had the chance to speak Ryan Joyner, one of our specialist about this newly formed team.

How important are the first 120 days?

The first 120 days are very important because it sets the standard for what kind of service they are going to receive. The better we can make their experience, the more likely we will be able to build a lasting business relationship.

How have clients reacted when they find out about the level of detailed service they’re going to receive when they become a SingleHop client?

So far we’ve received a great amount of positive feedback about the program. I think people really like knowing they have someone they can quickly contact to solve a problem. This is a note I received from someone just this morning:

“Thanks for your contact. I really appreciate the way you at SingleHop take care of your clients. I never experienced this level of customer care, and I’m really satisfied. For sure I will make contact with you if I have some question or need some information. I also would like to be contacted via email, cause its easier for me, I fell more comfortable.”

To no surprise the New Client  Specialist group will continue to grow and improve as time goes by!

Using Net Promoter Score to Gauge Clients’ Opinions

I recently wrote a blog post about the all important Net Promotor Scores (NPS) and how we use it to evaluate what our clients think of our products and services. It really has become an amazing tool we have now built into our daily  schedule.  We even have the real time NPS feed on a huge flat screen on the wall in our office. Good, bad, or indifferent every score is right there in the open to see!

Costumer Gauge, our partners in the NPS movement recently did a case study highlighting our involvement. You can see the entire case study here >>> SingleHop CustomerGauge

And The Award Goes To…

It is officially awards season! First it was the Golden Globes and next will be the Oscars. But fortunately for us, between the two star-studded events we have been able to pick up some hardware ourselves (and we didn’t even have to rent  tuxes).

I’m thrilled to announce that SingleHop won the award for Best Dedicated Server provider in the 6th Annual Web Hosting Awards by HostReview.com. Obviously anytime that you are recognized for being the best in class it feels good, but this honor is really very special for every SingleHopper. Dedicated servers have always been at the core of our business and even though we now offer a diverse product line, this shows that we’ve never lost our focus.

According to hostreview.com “Each winner has demonstrated a unique approach and exceptional dedication in addressing the rapidly changing technologies and business challenges of their customers. Over the past year, the honored hosting providers brought incredible value and delivered innovative solutions to the companies and individual clients they serve and the marketplace as a whole.”

As we continue to add products and services, like the recent addition of our public cloud, our goal is to keep collecting trophies along the way.

Courageous Kids Inspire SingleHoppers

I am pleased to announce that we have been able to once again, help an amazing organization with a charitable donation – The Center for Courageous Kids. We as a company have always tried to take an extremely active role in giving back to those in need, and not for the positive press, but because it is the right thing to!

Our Co-founder and CEO, Zak Boca is a Kentucky native who recently had the chance to visit The Center for Courageous Kids.  In his words “It was like Patch Adams meets the best summer camp ever.” Just read the organization’s vision and tell me it doesn’t sound like a magical place:

“A world-class medical camping facility in the rolling hills of Scottsville, Kentucky providing a cost-free, safe, and fun camping experience for seriously ill and disabled children and their families.”

Since the camp was founded in February 2008, it has opened its doors to over 10,000 children and their families. The center offers two different programs – a traditional overnight camp experience for five nights and six days during the summer or the family retreat option that allows a child’s entire family to spend a weekend together! The children and their families are able to enjoy the ability to do specially designed physical activities like swimming and horseback riding throughout their stay at the camp!

This organization, like so many others like it, is able to function and flourish based solely on donations from individuals, corporations, and civic groups. We are thrilled to know that our $10,000 donation will go directly to helping the camp stock and maintain their in-house pharmacy. I know that I speak on behalf of every SingleHopper when I say we’re thrilled to work for a company that takes such an active role in philanthropic organizations.  We are actually starting to plan a road trip to the camp so we can see it for ourselves and meet the bravest kids of the world!

Cloud & Dedicated Server Hosting Together

In order to stay ahead of the curve and hopefully our clients needs and wants, we at SingleHop hold product development as a top priority. Keeping our hand on the pulse of industry changes as well as competitors’ innovations is how we have continued to grow at such a rapid rate (Over 7,900% over the past three years).  One of the biggest challenges within the world of product development is coming up with a name that is unique yet accurately conveys the product’s purpose or mission. Everyone wants a name that pops, a name that’s easy to remember, and if you’re lucky a name that becomes a brand within a brand (iPhone to Apple).

One of the latest products to come out of the SingleHop laboratory is a little something we like to call the ”Dynamic Server.” I know what you’re thinking, “what kind of name is that?” And “what exactly is a Dynamic Server?” The product is the name and the name is the product!

Dynamic Servers combine the flexibility behind cloud computing with the real deal resources of a true show dedicated server. That being said, I think you know why we went with “Dynamic Server.” Can you say the best of both worlds?  Now don’t you worry, just because this is a new product, it does not mean you are locked int one type of hardware or operating systems. The entire deployment process is completely automated, per usual.

The flexibility within the virtualization of a Dynamic Server allows the client complete control over a number of moving parts: CPU cycles, memory, and storage. Similar to a traditional cloud instance, the Dynamic Server’s resources can be adjusted in real time by using our client portal, LEAP.

The Man Behind the Machines

I recently had a chance to talk to  Dave Szczur, our Director of Facilities here at SingleHop. Or as I like to call him the “Man Behind the Machines!”

Where are you from?

Chicago, born and raised.

Were you a computer kid? What was your first computer?

Absolutely. First used was a Commodore 64. First I ever personally owned was a custom built 66MHz Intel overdrive w/ 16MB ram, a 4MB Triton SVGA card, and 850MB HD.

How long have you been with SingleHop?

It will be 4 years this summer.

How much as changed since the early days?

A LOT. I started as the first DC tech, before that admins took care of everything. We now have 18 DC techs and growing to watch over our infrastructure and hardware needs, even though our automation and remote capabilities are much stronger than they were in years past.

What are your core responsibilities?

I keep the data centers staffed, handle scheduling and personal needs of the DC techs, handle all hardware orders, vendor relations, manage inventory with the help of NOC managers, deployments of new data centers, structure cabinet layouts, policies and procedures for the DC techs, and help in the planning stages and hands-on for large deployments or physical migrations. I also fill in for techs on vacation or sick days wherever I can. If the data center is busy, I am probably there. Basically anything hardware related with SingleHop is my gig.

What are the hot topics in the world of data centers right now?

With the world economy being where it is, cheap power and green cooling solutions is where it’s at!

What can we expect from SH in 2012?

New DC in PHX! Virtual load balancing, new server types (Intel E5 dropping soon!)

What do you do when you’re not managing nearly 10,000 servers?

I have a beautiful 10-month old daughter who takes up nearly all of my free time. Aside from family and work, I try to game and upgrade my rig whenever possible. I am also looking for a new band to sing in which I have absolutely no time for.

Crowdsourcing for Web Hosting Solutions

The term “crowdsourcing” has been a huge buzzword for the past few years and I think it will continue to be one as we move through 2012 (Google returned 10.7 million results for the term). I also think it’s a safe bet that crowdsourcing is far more common in small and medium-sized businesses than in their larger competitors.

When a large organization has a complex project that requires a great deal of resources, it will probably necessitate the involvement of multiple departments to get the project completed. The marketing department works with the product development department who works with the accounting department…I think you get the idea. Now take a smaller organization, 10 to 20 employees, they don’t have the luxury (or is it the curse) of specialized departments to complete a similar project.

Having worked for both a global media company as well as a company that consisted of two employees (counting myself) I am very familiar with the advantages as well as the disadvantages of crowdsourcing.

Advantages:

  • Cost-effective
  • Specialization should equal high quality products and services
  • Collaboration can lead to greater creativity
  • Can be a great recruiting tool

Disadvantages:

  • Easier to lose sight of the long-term objective
  • A lack of continuity
  • No ownership or teamwork
  • Fixing mistakes can be costly

It is because of both experiences, both good and bad, that I was thrilled with the concept and completion of our Crowdsourced Marketplace. It is literally a marketplace for all parties. If you are a small business owner who knows that you need IT infrastructure, but don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, our Crowdsourced Marketplace is perfect for you. Or maybe you’re a systems administrator who is extremely well versed in the web hosting industry, you have the opportunity to show off your skills and get paid within the Crowdsourced Marketplace.

Each solution (or product) within the Crowdsourced Marketplace comes with detailed instructions as well as the credentials of the architect (image below). This ensures great transparency between both builders and buyers. I know I may be a bit biased, but I truly think this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity within the infrastructure-as-a-service community.

SingleHoppers Know Client Engagement

Anyone who has spent any amount of time in the web hosting industry will most certainly tell you that it is an extremely competitive space. Not only are there literally, tens of thousands of companies who offer web hosting, the needs and wants of potential and existing clients are rapidly changing. It’s because of these reasons, we are extremely grateful for our nearly 4500 clients. After all, without them we would have nothing but a lot of lonely servers.

Within SingleHop, every team member, no matter the department, knows the importance of listening to our clients.  We also know that sometimes it takes more than just listening, it takes action to make sure our clients are completely satisfied. This level of client engagement is due in large part to the Net Promoter Score (NPS) system that we and other industry leaders utilize. No matter the size of your business, albeit 10 to 10,000 customers, this is an extremely effective tool. Using NPS has really allowed us to put our hand on the pulse of our clients and effectively modify different points of service.

An example of SingleHoppers listening and then taking swift action was the after the launch of LEAP3 in November.  There were a few different elements of the management platform that our clients thought could be more clearly defined. So guess what our development team did? They listened to our clients’ suggestions and redesigned those elements accordingly.

As our list of products and services continues to grow, so does the responsibility to provide the highest level of client satisfaction. I can assure you that despite our rapid growth (number of employees increased by 75% in 2011) that every SingleHopper takes that responsibility with a great sense of pride.

As 2011 comes to an end, we want to thank each one of our clients for an amazing year! We promise to 2012 is going to be even better!
