February 29, a day of mystery, galactic time shift, and frogs jumping everywhere.
So, many people don’t know what leap year is other than it adds an extra day to February and includes the odd birthday parties for the people in the unfortunate circumstance of having a birthday only every four years. It’s actually a bit complicated and effects not just the standard Gregorian calendar but the Julian and some lunar calendars. So, explanation:
A leap year (alias intercalary year) is a year with one or more extra days (or in lunisolar calendars an extra month) added to keep the calendar year synchronised with the astronomical or seasonal year. Seasons and astronomical events do not repeat an exact number of full days so, over time, the number of days in each year would drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. Inserting a day or month can correct the drift.
Wow. That’s technical. Basically, in the standard Gregorian calendar, an extra day is added every four years to compensate for the fact that the solar year is about 6 hours longer than 365 days. So, 6 hours every year, four years= 24 hours and we’re back on track with the sun.
We here at SingleHop are loving this leap year. Our frogs (and employees) are bouncing around the office (especially our very man-pretty Andy Pace) because we’re wholeheartedly leaping into this year. We take this day to mark our commitment to what Poindexter stands for: dedication, technical know-how, enthusiasm, and full-on nerdy-ness.
Right now we have a number of special offers on our dedicated servers because we are quite enthused about satisfying and assisting customers. You give us the opportunity to geek out, and truly, we love it. Our love of our work translates into our excellent service. One of the great living philosophers, Richard Sennett, wrote a book called “The Craftsman.” He posits that when a person feels that the work they do is important, they develop and perfect their craft. They work more effectively and skillfully because of their belief in what they do. We are living examples of this theory and work everyday to further perfect our craft and welcome the chance to share the work that we love with our customers. We “leap” at every opportunity (heh).
Happy Leap Year wishes from everyone at SingleHop and enjoy the birthday parties (It must be odd to be an adult celebrating your 6th birthday).
